In an iron-free co-culture environment, macrophages (with red cytoplasm indicating labile iron and blue nucleus) transfer their labile iron to breast cancer cells (which have green cytoplasm and blue nucleus), resulting in a yellow merged cytoplasm.

Prolactin iron transfer.png

In the same iron-free co-culture environment, macrophages pre-treated with prolactin accumulate more labile iron and are also able to transfer this iron to breast cancer cells.
